VIDEO/ Fire Breaks Out in a German National Park, Engulfing Around 400 Hectares of Land

A large forest fire has broken out in Müritz National Park in northeastern Germany and has spread to around 400 hectares of land. It has continued to burn on a former military training ground, while hundreds of emergency personnel have been deployed to fight the flames, with Bundeswehr helicopters providing air support.

The situation has been complicated by unexploded ordnance and other munitions debris on the former training ground.

Officials said that large-caliber munitions remain in the area, while anti-tank grenades have also previously been found at the site.

Media reports indicate that the heat from the fire has caused explosions, preventing firefighters from approaching the source of the flames. Teams are working from a safe distance using specialized sprinkler systems and protective barriers.

Till Backhaus, the environment minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, said the fire service was confident it could control the situation, meaning a state of emergency had not been declared.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, while firefighting operations are expected to continue for several more days. Residents and tourists have been advised to stay away from the danger zone and to avoid nearby cycling and hiking trails.
