Kosovo and Switzerland examine expanding cooperation in the economy, security and diaspora

Bern hosted political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of the Republic of Kosovo and Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting was led by Ilir Muçaj, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, and Pierre-Yves Fux, Assistant Secretary of State at Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Kosovo delegation comprised Mentor Latifi, Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to Switzerland; Valdrin Grainca, Acting Head of the Division for Europe and the European Union; Ms. Fatmire Musliu, Senior Official; and Gjenis Haxhimehmeti, Second Secretary.

The talks focused on the good relations between Kosovo and Switzerland, as well as ways to expand political, economic and institutional cooperation. The discussions included the continuation of political dialogue, reciprocal high-level visits and cooperation in sectors of interest to both sides.

Ilir Muçaj praised Switzerland’s unwavering support for Kosovo’s development and the consolidation of its international position. He also expressed gratitude for Switzerland’s role in maintaining security through its participation in KFOR.

A special part of the meeting was devoted to economic issues, including increasing Swiss investment in Kosovo, boosting trade and strengthening ties between the business communities. The parties emphasized the importance of the Free Trade Agreement between Kosovo and the EFTA member states, including Switzerland, entering into force on 1 October 2026. According to the discussions, the agreement represents an important opportunity for the further development of economic relations. Development cooperation and projects supporting Kosovo’s economic and institutional development were also addressed.

The representatives also discussed the Kosovo diaspora in Switzerland, its contribution to both countries and its impact on strengthening social, economic and cultural relations between them.

During the consultations, views were also exchanged on the situation in the Western Balkans, regional security and Kosovo’s European perspective. In the context of multilateral issues, attention was given to Kosovo’s membership in international organizations, including the Council of Europe, as well as the possibility of further coordination with Switzerland.

The Kosovo delegation confirmed its readiness to continue the periodic consultations and follow up on the issues discussed, with the aim of further strengthening bilateral relations.
