The tragedy occurred near the coastline, in the port of Ronda de Bera, around 75 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. The mother and daughter were two of three people injured as a result of the severe weather.
Spanish media reported that they had sought shelter at a kiosk in an open-air market. Under the pressure of the water, a wall separating the street from a home collapsed on top of them, causing critical injuries.
In a statement on Instagram, the Ronda de Bera authorities confirmed that the two women had succumbed to their injuries. The municipality also declared two days of official mourning.
The president of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, also offered his condolences to the victims’ relatives. In a post on X, he expressed his support for them during this time of grief.
The severe weather caused considerable damage in the area. Around 10 people were injured, while authorities evacuated a campsite and a nightclub. Water inundated roads and left several people trapped in their vehicles.
Heavy rainfall and flash flooding have continued to batter the area, while authorities are monitoring the situation.
