Donald Trump has once again brought attention to his position on Greenland, declaring that the territory should be under the control of the United States and not Denmark.
In remarks made on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey, the American president told reporters that Greenland carries major strategic weight for the US. He also criticized Copenhagen for the way this semi-autonomous territory is administered, in his view.

“It should be controlled by the United States, not Denmark,” Trump said during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to Trump, the Greenland issue has also affected his relations with allies within NATO. He claimed that Denmark is not investing enough in the island’s development and defense, while warning of an increase in the presence of Chinese and Russian ships in the area.
The American president further stressed that the US will not accept Greenland becoming an object of influence for rival powers. He added that Washington spends billions of dollars on defending allies against Russia.
The repetition of Trump’s claims about Greenland has caused tensions between Washington and Copenhagen, as well as reactions in Europe, as Denmark has repeatedly rejected any idea of relinquishing control over the territory.
On the other hand, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that dialogue between the US, Denmark and Greenland continues every month, while the issue remains part of diplomatic discussions between the parties.
