A Lufthansa aircraft flying from Frankfurt to Lisbon changed course and made an emergency landing in Lyon, France, after a battery carried by a passenger caught fire.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening, September 27. The Airbus A321-200, carrying 198 passengers, was operating flight LH1170 and landed in Lyon shortly before 11:00 p.m. Greek time, according to reports.
According to a Lufthansa spokesperson, the crew placed the battery in a special bag designed for lithium batteries, neutralizing the situation.
The passengers, along with the six crew members, safely disembarked and spent the night in a hotel. Their journey to Lisbon is expected to continue during the day today.
Authorities reported no injuries as a result of the incident.
Lufthansa apologized for the interruption to the flight and emphasized that protecting passengers and crew is the company’s top priority.
Since January 2026, Lufthansa has prohibited the use or charging of batteries in aircraft cabins. Under certain conditions, passengers may carry up to two such devices with them.
