Marta Kos, the European Union official responsible for enlargement, has called off her planned visit to Serbia, linking the decision to the tributes and praise given to former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladić.

In a statement published online on Friday, Kos stressed that receiving Mladić’s body with military honors, as well as the posthumous praise for him, was not in keeping with the principles of the European Union.
“The praise surrounding his death is incompatible with the values on which the path toward the EU has been built,” she wrote.
According to the senior European official, it was precisely because of this context that she decided not to make the planned trip to Serbia.
Ratko Mladić was convicted by international courts of war crimes and genocide committed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
