Customs intercepts transport of protected snakes and a lizard at Bogorodicë

During an inspection of a vehicle at the Bogorodicë border crossing, customs officials, in cooperation with the police, found and seized seven small snakes, including four pythons, as well as a lizard. The vehicle was being driven by a Kosovo citizen.

The reptiles identified were mainly protected species: two “Carpet Spilota” pythons, one “Short-tailed,” one “Bredl’s Carpet,” one “Chinese Ring Rat” snake and one “Reticulated Super Dwarf.” The venomous “Baron Snake” was also found in the shipment.

The reptiles will be handed over to the responsible institutions, while the procedures provided for will be initiated against the person involved.

The Customs Administration reminds the public that the transport of protected species is regulated by special requirements and mandatory permits under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Bringing these species into the country without the relevant documentation constitutes a violation of the law.
