Clash over “Patriot” Missiles, Zelensky Removes Ukraine’s Ambassador to the US

In a decree, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna. The decision was expected following the reorganization of the Ukrainian government last month.

Her removal comes as Kyiv steps up pressure on Washington to supply more Patriot air defense missiles, which are intended to help deter Russian attacks.

Stefanishyna, who previously served as deputy prime minister and justice minister, was appointed ambassador to Washington in July last year.

For Ukraine, the post of ambassador to the US is of crucial importance, as the country relies on American weapons and intelligence sharing in its war against Russia. Zelensky’s relations with US President Donald Trump have gone through periods of tension and have at times been marked by turmoil.

Recently, however, the Republican president has taken a more encouraging stance toward the Ukrainian leader. Ukrainian media report that Stefanishyna is being investigated by Ukraine’s anti-corruption agency over suspicions related to corruption, but no formal charges have been filed against her.

Following the changes he made to the government in July, Zelensky has not yet announced the name of the person who will succeed Stefanishyna as ambassador in Washington.
