The lawmaker was in the driver’s seat, while the car was parked by the side of the road. A firearm was also found near his body.
Veracruz Interior Minister Ricardo Auet confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot. However, he said no further details could be provided at this stage.

“The death was caused by a gunshot. We cannot provide further details at this stage,” Auet said, without disclosing whether the case was being investigated as a homicide or suicide.
Escobar had extensive experience in public administration. Before entering politics, he had worked as a teacher, led a union and served as Veracruz’s education minister from 2018 to 2021.
In September 2024, he was elected to Mexico’s federal Congress.
Veracruz is considered one of Mexico’s most violent states. For years, the activities of criminal organizations linked to drug trafficking have led to a high number of violent incidents in the area.
The investigation is continuing to determine the full circumstances of the lawmaker’s death.
