According to Chinese state media, the natural disaster occurred on July 26 in the Shuangshimen tourist area, in the mountainous region of southern Gansu. In addition to those killed, 23 other people were injured by the powerful floodwaters.

Shuangshimen is a popular destination for climbers and campers during the summer season, but heavy rainfall triggered sudden flooding that caused extensive destruction.

State news agency Xinhua reported that China’s National Commission for Disaster Prevention will oversee the investigation into the causes and circumstances of the disaster.

China has faced a series of extreme weather events this summer, including floods and landslides. In early July, 21 people were killed in a landslide in the same province of Gansu.

Chinese authorities have stepped up monitoring and warning measures in high-risk areas as the country continues to grapple with the effects of extreme weather.
