The situation involving migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has turned into a tragedy. Authorities say at least 67 people died while attempting to swim from Morocco to Spanish territory. Many others were escorted back to Morocco by Spanish police and military personnel.

The incident has sparked strong political reactions across Europe and once again placed migration at the center of debate. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized the stance taken by several European Union countries toward the crisis, singling out Italy.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, for her part, announced the suspension of the free-movement agreement with Spain, arguing that the situation poses a security risk. Madrid rejected the measure as unfounded, stressing that Ceuta lies outside the Schengen Area and that migrants are unable to travel freely to the rest of Europe.
Spanish authorities suspect that the large influx of migrants may have been prompted by social media posts claiming that “Spain is open.” However, those who reached Ceuta found neither shelter nor a way to continue their journey to mainland Europe, while most of them were returned to Morocco.
Meanwhile, Spain has stepped up security measures along Ceuta’s maritime border in an effort to prevent further crossing attempts. In the coming days, European Union interior ministers are expected to consider new measures to protect the bloc’s external borders.
