Donald Trump has said that Benjamin Netanyahu is not at risk of being detained on US soil, as debate continues over the legal possibility of arresting the Israeli prime minister during his planned visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

“Under no circumstances will Benjamin Netanyahu be arrested during his stay in the US,” the US president wrote on the Truth Social platform. In the same post, Trump also praised the Israeli prime minister’s contribution to the fight against Iran.
However, the head of the White House did not refer by name to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. A few days earlier, Mamdani had raised the question of whether there was a legal possibility that Netanyahu could be arrested while attending UN proceedings.
Speaking to The New York Times, Mamdani described Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and said that “Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague.” His statement referred to the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The Israeli prime minister usually travels to New York every September, when the annual gathering of world leaders is held at the United Nations General Assembly. The ICC has issued an arrest warrant against him over allegations related to suspected war crimes during the conflict in Gaza.
Israel has rejected allegations that it committed war crimes and also disputes the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.
