More than 100 million people in 18 US states and Washington, DC, have been affected by worsening air quality caused by smoke from major wildfires in Canada.
High pollution levels have been recorded in Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Washington, where authorities have advised residents to limit outdoor activities and wear protective masks when they need to go outside.

The effects of the smoke have also led to the postponement of sporting events, the cancellation of outdoor activities and the temporary closure of several amusement parks.
Experts warn that fine particles in the smoke can cause severe breathing difficulties and worsen heart and lung diseases. The risk is greater for children, the elderly and people with health conditions.
Meteorologists expect conditions to begin improving over the weekend, as rainfall, a change in wind direction and a cold front are expected to help clear the smoke.
