Hamza opposes linking the president’s election to the law on the Specialist Chambers

The chairman of the PDK, Bedri Hamza, has reacted to Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s proposal on electing the president and approving the Law on the Specialist Chambers.

According to Hamza, the candidacy of Bekim Sejdiu does not represent an agreement with the PDK, but rather an understanding with another political entity, which he referred to as the LDK, IndeksOnline reports.

“It is an agreement with another political entity, the LDK. So, this is an agreement outside the PDK’s negotiating table,” he declared.

Hamza called for the law on the Specialist Chambers to be put to a vote as soon as possible, saying that every delay jeopardizes the completion of the parliamentary procedure.

“We are calling for the law to be put to a vote. Every hour that passes makes it impossible to approve the law in two readings,” said the PDK leader.

He warned that the absence of a political agreement could send Kosovo to elections, although, according to him, such a development would serve no one.

Hamza also declared that the constitutional deadlines for the constitution of the Assembly had not been respected and linked this situation to the lack of concrete steps toward electing the president.

He said that from August 7 until now, no concrete and serious action had been taken to reach an agreement on the president.

Commenting on the Assembly’s statement regarding the ruling of the Specialist Chambers in The Hague, Hamza stressed that it should not be used for political gain.

“A political statement! I am grateful to and thank all the deputies who voted in favor of the statement on the KLA. I believe that it should not be only the PDK speaking about a just war imposed for freedom and independence,” Hamza said.

According to him, legal changes must guarantee that the proceedings in The Hague are conducted fairly and that the people being tried there should not be treated as if they were being prosecuted for their actions as members or leaders of political entities.

“The law demands and will provide justice for the people involved in this process. They are not there for their post-war actions, nor are they there as members or leaders of any political entity. They are part of the brightest chapter of our history, not for organ trafficking or anything else,” he declared.

The PDK leader said that the aim of the amendments was to enable the Specialist Chambers to deliver fair results.

He warned that failure to approve the law in both readings would result in the loss of its legal effect, while if the country went to elections, the entire matter would start from the beginning.

“If the law is not approved in both readings, ultimately it produces no legal effect. If the law is not finalized and the country goes to elections, it returns to the starting point. I can count as many steps as you want. We can count that I have met with all the political parties regarding this law; we have gained no benefit,” Hamza said.

He ultimately opposed linking the approval of the Law on the Specialist Chambers to the election of the president, calling for the two processes to be addressed separately and without mutual conditions.
