As the deadline for electing the president approaches, several important draft laws and international agreements for Kosovo remain unapproved in the Assembly. If no political agreement is reached, these issues risk remaining suspended for even longer.

Experts say that before October 6, initiatives directly related to the economy, finances and the implementation of reforms requested by the European Union should be reviewed.
These include the law on budget allocations, the draft laws required for the Growth Plan, international agreements and the draft law on the Specialist Chambers. The demand is for these issues to be addressed by the beginning of next week at the latest.
Acting President and Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu has said that the draft laws will soon be reviewed in parliament.
Naim Jakaj, a senior researcher at the Kosovo Law Institute, stressed that special attention should be paid to several priority issues.
“Several key issues should move forward. In particular, the laws related to the Growth Plan, the law on budget allocations and two or three laws that may be related to the ratification of international agreements. Special attention should also be paid to the draft law on the Specialist Chambers,” Jakaj said.
The approval of some of these initiatives also requires the votes of opposition lawmakers.
According to experts, a new political crisis would have consequences extending beyond the organization of new elections. It could slow down reforms, delay the approval of laws affecting citizens’ lives and cause the loss of millions of euros.
