Protest ends in front of Assembly, MPs urged to vote without delay on amendments for the Special Court

Following the 18th consecutive gathering, participants in the “Not in My Name” initiative marched toward one of the entrances to the Kosovo Assembly. They called on MPs to vote without delay on amendments and supplements to the Law on the Specialist Chambers of Kosovo in The Hague.

During the action, protesters read out the names of the 110 MPs one by one, urging them to act and approve the draft law. During the march, they chanted “Vote the law” and held banners and symbols of the KLA.

Çlirim Haziri, the organizer of the nightly protests, said that the Assembly owed this law to the KLA and its martyrs. According to him, the state was built on their sacrifice, wounds and blood; the demand for amendments does not stem from fear of justice, but from opposition to an injustice being presented as justice. Haziri said that MPs owed Kosovo the election of a president, while they owed the KLA the approval of the law.

Protesters called for the vote not to be postponed any further, stressing that three days remained until the deadline for electing the president. Through the “Not in My Name” protest, they are demanding concrete action from the institutions to protect the KLA and its fighters.

The protest began on Saturday evening in “Skënderbeu” Square in Pristina, where many citizens gathered. For the 18th consecutive time, they opposed the decision of the Special Court in The Hague to sentence four former KLA leaders, which they consider unjust.

On September 16, the Special Court sentenced Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi to 25 years in prison each, Kadri Veseli to 18 years and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years in prison. During the day, the “Freedom Has a Name” platform held an action in front of the Assembly, calling on MPs to convene an extraordinary session to review the legal amendments.

On October 2, the Kosovo Government declared that the PDK initiative to amend the Law on the Specialist Chambers faced no legal obstacles. The amendments have still not been approved by the Assembly, while the PDK has announced that it is making its support for the election of the president conditional on their approval. The constitutional deadline for electing the president expires on October 6.
