According to Haxhiu, Sejdiu’s withdrawal from the race came as a result of the lack of support from these lawmakers. She clarified that the agreement between Vetëvendosje and the LDK on his candidacy remains in force.
“The presidential candidate is Mr. Bekim Sejdiu. He withdrew from the race because he did not have the support of the six LDK lawmakers, who did not back him. We have not withdrawn from the agreement. I am convinced that if there is a declaration that they will remain in the chamber, Mr. Sejdiu will return. He withdrew because he did not have the votes,” she said.
She added that Sejdiu’s renomination could become a reality if the necessary votes are secured in the Assembly, also highlighting his professional and moral qualities.
“I think that if there is a guarantee that two-thirds of the Assembly will support him, then he will return. I appreciated the fact that he agreed to be the joint candidate of Vetëvendosje and the LDK, while I value his high professional and moral integrity. Mr. Sejdiu has served with dignity wherever he has been, which is why I considered such a figure suitable for the post of president,” Haxhiu said.
Regarding efforts to resolve the political crisis, Haxhiu said that the negotiations are being led by caretaker Prime Minister and Vetëvendosje chairman Albin Kurti. She called on political parties to act seriously and constructively.
“The negotiations are being led by Prime Minister Kurti, who is also the chairman of Vetëvendosje, and these meetings may produce important issues to move the processes forward and prevent the country from being sent to early elections. Believe me, the biggest mistake we could make now, especially following the Hague decision, would be to send the country to early elections. Therefore, I call on political parties to show seriousness and constructiveness,” she declared.
