Turkey plans to open the underground spaces beneath Hagia Sophia in Istanbul to visitors for the first time as they are gradually uncovered.
Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced the plan while presenting progress on the historic monument’s extensive restoration. Speaking after the launch of the Antalya Culture Route Festival, he said the spaces beneath Hagia Sophia are at least as interesting as those above ground.

According to Ersoy, Hagia Sophia is undergoing the most extensive restoration, conservation and reinforcement work in the history of the Republic. He said the work is being carried out under scientific supervision and that professors on the scientific committee consider it among the most comprehensive since the time of architect Sinan.
The minister explained that he first intends to show journalists the underground work. Later, if the right conditions are in place, the public may also be able to visit these spaces. He stressed that every step is subject to scientific oversight because of Hagia Sophia’s value as cultural heritage. While the monument remains open for worship and visits, particularly delicate engineering work is being carried out to protect its safety and original structure.
