During the three-hour hearing of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, the 85-year-old invoked the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution more than 100 times. This amendment protects a person from being compelled to give testimony that could be used against them.
The hearing was led by Republican Senator Rand Paul, known as one of Fauci’s harshest critics. He claims that the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases misled Congress about funding for coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, an accusation Fauci has repeatedly denied.
Rand Paul also made public 1,141 pages of the diary Fauci kept during the pandemic years. According to the Republican senator, the contents of these private notes do not match the positions the former official expressed publicly.
The senator also published communications between scientists. Republicans say these exchanges show that the authors privately discussed the possibility that the virus may have leaked from a laboratory, even though they did not publicly support this hypothesis.
Fauci has described the allegations against him as defamatory, saying that Rand Paul is leading a political campaign aimed at sending him to prison. Democrats, too, have characterized the hearing as a political process whose outcome was predetermined.
At the same time, over 150 scientists have called for an end to what they consider the persecution of Fauci. According to them, no credible evidence has been presented linking him to the creation of the virus or the concealment of its origin.
The question of where COVID-19 originated remains without a definitive answer. The FBI and CIA view the possibility of a laboratory leak as plausible, but the CIA has assigned a low level of confidence to this hypothesis. Meanwhile, four other U.S. intelligence agencies, along with the National Intelligence Council, support the explanation that the virus was transmitted naturally from animals to humans.
