Morocco Names Highway After Donald Trump in Recognition of His Stance on Western Sahara

By order of King Mohammed VI, Moroccan authorities have decided to name one of the country’s main road arteries after U.S. President Donald Trump.

State news agency MAP reported that the Tiznit-Dakhla route will officially be named the “Donald J. Trump Highway.” The U.S. president was informed of the decision in a letter from the Moroccan monarch dated July 2.

According to Mohammed VI, the initiative is a gesture of gratitude for Trump’s 2020 decision. At the time, the United States recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, while Morocco normalized relations with Israel.

The road is approximately 1,055 kilometers long and is described by Moroccan authorities as the longest road infrastructure project in Africa. The project, which has not yet been fully completed, passes through Western Sahara and connects the city of Tiznit with Dakhla. Its cost is estimated at nearly 850 million euros.

Donald Trump responded publicly by thanking King Mohammed VI for the recognition. In a post on Truth Social, he described the decision as an “extraordinary honor” and expressed his desire to one day travel the entire length of the highway.

Western Sahara remains a disputed territory, with Morocco and the Polisario Front having clashed for decades over the region’s status.
