On 31.08.2026, after several weeks of negotiations, the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo reached an agreement on a consensus candidate for the position of president of the Republic of Kosovo. The chosen candidate is Professor Doctor Bekim Sejdiu.

The agreement was announced by LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku following a meeting with acting Prime Minister and LVV leader Albin Kurti, held at the Kosovo Assembly.
Abdixhiku said that since July 9, the two political entities had held ongoing meetings and discussions on the issue of electing the president. According to him, the talks had not been easy, but they had been exhaustive, and both sides had worked to find a common candidate.
“Of all the names that were proposed and considered, during our joint discussions we agreed on one name, and that is Professor Doctor Bekim Sejdiu,” Abdixhiku said.
The LDK leader described Sejdiu as a figure with experience and a distinguished career. He reiterated that the aim of the negotiations had been to determine a consensus candidate for president.
The meeting on 31.08.2026 was held after a series of efforts by the LVV and LDK leaders to overcome the political deadlock, elect a new president and avoid new elections.
The next meeting had begun at 12:00, while Kurti, before entering the Assembly, said that the parties had goodwill and a real opportunity to reach an agreement. “We are moving forward now, as you can see, and we hope to reach an agreement,” he said.
Abdixhiku had arrived at the Assembly before Kurti but did not make a statement to the media.
A day earlier, following the latest meeting between the two leaders, held on Saturday evening, no specific details were disclosed about the content of the discussions. Kurti had briefly said that there would be news only when there were results.
After the agreement was reached, Bekim Sejdiu thanked representatives of both parties for their trust and said he felt honored by the agreement on his name. He said that he had accepted the proposal, even though his ambitions had been focused primarily on academic and professional pursuits.
Sejdiu stressed that he was aware of the burden and responsibility carried by the office of president, as well as the current political circumstances in the Republic of Kosovo. He said that he had placed himself at the service of the Republic, its citizens and the state, with the aim of serving them with dedication and to the best of his abilities.
According to him, the process of electing the president includes both a political dimension and a constitutional procedure carried out in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo.
