In her statement on behalf of the EU, High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas said that the ICC must carry out its mandate independently, without external influence or interference.

She stressed that the European Union is ready to take any necessary measures to ensure the continuity and effectiveness of the court’s work.

Kallas described the attacks and threats against the court, its officials and staff, as well as against those who cooperate with it—including representatives of civil society and service providers—as unacceptable.

The EU’s High Representative welcomed Washington’s decision to postpone the implementation of the measures, considering it a step that creates room for diplomatic dialogue and for finding a solution.

According to her, the priority should be the swift lifting of the sanctions and the imposition of no new measures that could undermine the independence and integrity of the International Criminal Court.

Kallas also welcomed the United States’ willingness to discuss its concerns with the states parties to the Rome Statute, the ICC’s founding document.

She added that the EU would continue to support the court by contributing to the protection of the institution, its staff and all those who cooperate with it.
