She said the killing of women cannot be regarded simply as an individual tragedy or a private family matter.
Jahjaga stressed that confronting violence is a shared responsibility of society and institutions. They must challenge the attitudes that make violence seem normal, the silence that tolerates it and every attempt to justify it or downplay its seriousness.
“How many more lives must be lost before violence against women is no longer treated as just another tragedy? Yesterday’s horrific incident in Gjilan has deeply shaken us, but beyond the pain, we must confront the bitter reality of a society where women still lose their lives at the hands of people with whom they should feel safe. No woman should live in fear that she may be killed, and no one should pay with their life for the right to live freely, safely and with dignity,” she wrote.
The former head of state offered her condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.
V.R. is suspected of killing his wife, N.B., and her brother, E.R., and wounding the victims’ uncle.
After the incident, the suspect surrendered to the police.
