The jury in the trial of Lindsay Clancy has entered its fourth day of deliberations as it considers the fate of the 36-year-old former nurse accused of killing her three young children.

The incident occurred in 2023, when Clancy’s two sons and daughter were killed in the basement of the family’s home in Massachusetts. She faces three first-degree murder charges in the case.
Clancy does not dispute that she was responsible for the deaths of the children. However, her lawyers argue that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and that, at the time of the crime, her severe mental state prevented her from understanding the difference between right and wrong.
The prosecution disputes this version and says Clancy killed the children following a deliberate and calculated decision, while aware that her actions were wrong.
The jury consists of nine women and three men. After days of deliberations, it may reach one of the following conclusions regarding Clancy:
not guilty
not guilty by reason of mental incapacity
guilty of first-degree murder
guilty of second-degree murder
guilty of involuntary manslaughter
The issue of Clancy’s mental health at the time of the killings has been at the center of the trial.
The defense has stated that she experienced hallucinations and that a voice ordered her to kill the children. Mental health experts have testified about the severity of postpartum psychosis, while family members have described the changes they noticed in her mental state.
Under Massachusetts law, Clancy does not have to prove that she was suffering from a mental illness and was not criminally responsible. The prosecution must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she was criminally responsible at the time of the crime.
A not-guilty verdict would result in her release, although this is considered a highly unlikely scenario. If she is found not guilty by reason of mental incapacity, Clancy would be sent to a psychiatric institution.
