A person has died in the Netherlands after being infected with West Nile virus, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) announced.

The country’s first case of infection since 2020 was announced by the institute last week. The number of recorded suspected cases has now risen to three. RIVM has not clarified whether the victim was among the confirmed cases, nor has it published any further information about the person.
The infection is transmitted to humans mainly through mosquito bites. The World Health Organization estimates that around one in 150 cases may develop a severe and life-threatening form of the disease.
According to the WHO, high temperatures are favoring the spread of the virus in Europe. An increase in cases has also been reported in Greece and Italy this summer.
Despite these developments, authorities in the Netherlands say that the likelihood of people becoming infected with West Nile virus in the country remains very low.
