EU spokesman Guillaume Mercier told Radio Free Europe that the Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor’s Office must continue their work in fulfilling their mandate, without interference.
“The justice process must take its course, which is particularly important for the victims. Authorities must ensure the protection of all communities and residents throughout Kosovo,” Mercier said.
The EU said it has taken note of the first-instance verdict and assessed that the Specialist Chambers are dispensing justice through fair, impartial, and independent proceedings, based on the principle of individual criminal responsibility.
Mercier noted that the convicted individuals can contest the judgment by appealing before a special panel of Appeals judges.
At the same time, the European Union reaffirmed its support for the Specialist Chambers, recalling that they were established based on decisions of the Kosovo Assembly in 2014 and 2015 and operate within Kosovo’s judicial system.
According to the EU, the work of these institutions is important for establishing criminal responsibility, justice for victims and their families from all communities in Kosovo, and for the reconciliation process.
“An environment free from fear and revenge must be created, while victims and witnesses must be protected,” Mercier declared. / REL
