At least 920 people have died from the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday, National Assembly Speaker Jorge Rodríguez announced on Friday.
Authorities reported that at least 3,360 people were injured as a result of the seismic tremors, while 383 buildings suffered major damage.

According to Rodríguez, at least 172 people are still trapped under the rubble, as search-and-rescue teams continue operations to find survivors.
The hardest-hit region is La Guaira, which has been placed entirely under military control to facilitate emergency response efforts. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid traveling to the disaster-stricken area.
“We understand people’s strong desire to provide help, but the roads used to transport the injured are being blocked.
The best way to help is to keep the road routes clear, so that medical and rescue teams can carry out their work as quickly and efficiently as possible,” Rodríguez said.
