A 22-year-old Albanian man has been arrested in connection with the incident. He is being held in prison and is accused of attempted murder.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening, around 10 p.m., after both men got off the same train at Treviglio station. The 35-year-old was accompanied by two friends who were waiting for him there.
According to investigators, the two initially engaged in a verbal argument, which later escalated into physical violence.
A witness, the owner of a business near the station, told investigators that he had seen the two men confronting each other from the moment they got off the train. He said the Albanian man was shouting and threatening other people, repeatedly saying: “I will kill you.”
Some of the scenes were recorded by security cameras in the area. According to the preliminary reconstruction carried out by the Carabinieri, the 35-year-old is believed to have threatened the 22-year-old in the underpass with a large kitchen knife.
The confrontation continued further on. Shortly afterward, in a parking lot on Vittorio Veneto Boulevard, near the mosque, the 22-year-old Albanian allegedly followed the 35-year-old while carrying two knives. He then struck him in the arm and the middle of his back.
The attack was witnessed by several people in the area, including people who were going to the mosque to pray. A woman who witnessed the incident called an ambulance.
The injured man was rushed to Treviglio hospital in serious condition. His condition stabilized during the previous day; however, the 35-year-old remains hospitalized and under medical observation, with a guarded prognosis.
After the incident, a large amount of blood was found at the scene of the attack. Authorities also seized a folding-blade knife believed to have been used in the assault.
The Treviglio Carabinieri arrested the 22-year-old Albanian on Thursday evening. To establish the full sequence of events, investigators are analyzing security-camera footage and taking statements from people who were near the station and the parking lot.
The young man was questioned in prison by prosecutor Giulia Angeleri. He admitted stabbing the 35-year-old, but attempted to minimize his responsibility by claiming that he had acted to defend himself from the attack.
Investigators suspect that the conflict originated from the 35-year-old’s romantic relationship. On Monday, the Albanian man will appear before the judge for the preliminary investigations, where a hearing will be held to review the arrest.
