Former Finance Minister, Arben Malaj, has announced that he will run as an independent candidate for the mayor of the Vlora Municipality in the 2027 local elections.

In a public statement on his Facebook profile, he addressed citizens and supporters who continue to ask him about this decision, also listing five key benefits that, according to him, a candidacy detached from parties offers.
Malaj emphasizes that stepping outside the frameworks of political organizations provides him with full autonomy in the decision-making process, without being burdened by obligations to the interests of groups or powerful clans.
“Yes! I will run in 2027 as an independent for mayor of Vlora Municipality. This is the answer for every supporter and well-wisher, but also for every citizen who asks me more and more,” Malaj says.
Among the advantages that this form of candidacy brings, he highlights decision-making independence, ethical standards and credibility, freedom of maneuver during the campaign, positioning as an open challenge to the existing party system, as well as the detachment of the administrative apparatus from political influences.
He argues that an independent figure has the opportunity to call upon a broader social front, including academics, activists, entrepreneurs, and civil society organizations, thus overcoming classic political divisions.
“Every decision will be guided exclusively by the good of the Vlora community,” he stresses, adding that the objective is an administration where skills and equal opportunities prevail for both individuals and economic activities.
Arben Malaj previously served as a deputy of the Socialist Party and held the portfolio of Minister of Finance during several mandates of the socialist government.
