Abdixhiku Calls for the Immediate Convening of the Constitutive Session

Following a meeting with the parliamentary group of the Democratic League of Kosovo, the party’s leader, Lumir Abdixhiku, announced that the LDK had decided to withdraw all its demands, including its claim to the presidency, in an effort to break the deadlock.

Abdixhiku made the party’s new position public during a press conference.

He said the LDK would not seek any position and was ready to help overcome the current crisis without gaining any political benefit. According to him, the party is not seeking any ministries, and the Vetëvendosje Movement may keep all of them.

Speaking about the response from Vetëvendosje Movement leader Albin Kurti, Abdixhiku said it amounted to a proposal for participation without weight or genuine responsibility.

Abdixhiku explained that the LDK had recognized the Vetëvendosje Movement’s right to lead the government and the Assembly, while proposing that it take responsibility for the institution of the presidency. According to him, such a formula would guarantee institutional stability, stable governance and the promotion of democratic values, while the balanced division of responsibilities was not intended to allow the parties to undermine one another.

However, he said the LVV’s response was not an offer of partnership, but an opportunity for participation without weight, responsibility without influence and a merely decorative presence. He said the LDK had been offered only three ministries and the position of deputy prime minister, an offer the parliamentary group had deemed disproportionate. For this reason, the LDK rejected it, while Abdixhiku said the rejection subsequently prompted a public campaign by the Vetëvendosje Movement.

The LDK leader stressed that the party would abandon the political agreement and would not seek any state position.

Nevertheless, according to him, the LDK remains ready for talks on electing the president of the Republic of Kosovo, who should belong to the people rather than to a party.

Abdixhiku said the LDK’s demands would not be allowed to determine the fate of the Republic. He said that, to unblock the process and pave the way for a solution in the state’s interest, the party was withdrawing all claims to positions and pledging to contribute without receiving any political benefit.

According to him, the LDK is no longer seeking participation in the government, and the Vetëvendosje Movement may retain all the ministries. The party is also relinquishing its claim to the position of Assembly speaker and its request to lead the institution of the presidency.

He added that if the LVV believes it does not need the LDK as a partner, then it will not have it in that role. Under these circumstances, the LDK will remain in opposition, but Abdixhiku assured that this position would not turn into a blockade.

The LDK leader reiterated his readiness for discussions on electing the president, without seeking any position in return for this contribution. He called for the president to be elected jointly and to be a figure who protects the Republic and the Constitution.

Abdixhiku called for the Assembly’s constitutive session to be convened as soon as possible, stressing that the Vetëvendosje Movement had now received the LDK’s response.

He said the choice was now clear: the LVV could ensure institutional stability through a jointly elected president and then govern with its majority, or it could lead the country into a new crisis and a far more serious confrontation by refusing to compromise.

According to Abdixhiku, there is no reason to delay the constitution of the Kosovo Assembly, and the constitutive session should therefore be convened immediately. He stressed that the LDK had made its choice, putting the Republic ahead of positions.

Abdixhiku’s statement followed several meetings with LVV leader Albin Kurti. The LDK leader had asked for his party to be given the presidency, but Kurti did not accept the request.

The PDK and the Alliance have called for the Assembly’s constitutive session to be convened tomorrow.
