A joint proposal from the prosecution and defense attorneys suggests that the trial should begin in June 2027. However, the final date remains in the hands of federal judge Alvin Hellerstein, who will make the ultimate decision.

Both spouses have pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges. According to US authorities, they used their high-ranking positions in Venezuela to facilitate cocaine shipments destined for the United States.

The defense strategy is expected to focus on seeking the dismissal of the indictment, based on the immunity that Maduro enjoys as the leader of a sovereign state. Moreover, his legal team is examining the possibility of contesting the legality of the January 3rd arrest, which was carried out by US special forces at his residence in Caracas on the orders of President Donald Trump.

In his first court appearance, Maduro described himself as a ‘prisoner of war,’ claiming that the US had been aiming to remove him from power for years.

After his arrest, the leadership of the state was assumed by former Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, who has initiated moves to normalize relations with Washington.

In this context, the United States has eased some of the sanctions that burdened Venezuela’s energy sector, giving international oil and gas companies the opportunity to increase their investments in the country.
