His appointment to head the Treasury is an unexpected move, as Healey was not considered the frontrunner for the post. However, the Labour Party veteran has experience in the sector, having served as a Treasury minister from 2002 to 2007.
Healey, 66, resigned from Keir Starmer’s government last month, criticising the inadequate level of investment in the military. He said Britain was not sufficiently prepared to meet security challenges in an increasingly dangerous world.
Securing funding to increase defence investment is expected to be among Healey’s most important tasks. The sector has been identified as one of the new British government’s priorities.
Another significant appointment is that of Ed Miliband as Foreign Secretary. The former Labour Party leader from 2010 to 2015, who also served as Energy Secretary in Keir Starmer’s government, will now lead British foreign policy.
Shabana Mahmood will remain in the cabinet, continuing in her role as Home Secretary. She is known for her tough stance on immigration issues.
The formation of the cabinet follows recent political developments in Britain, as Andy Burnham has begun selecting the team that will lead the country in the period ahead.
