Flutura Açka: Berisha should have stepped down as leader of the DP, Parliament disgraced itself by not stripping Balluku of her mandate

Appearing on the “This Week” program on News24, Flutura Açka discussed political developments in the country, the reform, clashes within the Democratic Party and the way the opposition is confronting Edi Rama’s government.

She criticized the process of discussing the reform, pointing out that although 120 meetings have been held, a concrete draft has still not been presented. According to Açka, the focus should have been on the content of the reform rather than on the meetings, which she described as a formal process without visible results.

“If you do not intend to vote for it, there is no point in declaring this when you have been aligned for 13 years and have always voted. You cannot suddenly remember to play the role of a dissident. Perhaps he was also serious about it, but what matters is the action. You must take the step and leave with honor, because a position made public must be upheld to the end,” she said.

Açka said the series of meetings resembled “the bride and groom meeting before the wedding,” while asking where the reform draft was. In her view, the October 1 meeting appeared more like a mutual favor, and the debate should have focused on the reform, not on the form of the process.

Speaking about the Democratic Party, she said she observed a clear division within the political force. Açka stated that the DP should also apologize for the territorial reform, while recalling that its 83 parliamentary mandates were secured in 2024. According to her, some of the current figures should not have been members of Parliament.

She said the DP had the opportunity to prepare to take power if it became involved in a profound reform, but added that Sali Berisha should have withdrawn from leading the party. “We are not together because we have split over a cause. A good leader emerges from the process and from the stronger project. The person who opposes Edi Rama with arguments should win. First, we must begin with the argument within the party and then take it to Parliament,” she said.

Açka also directed some of her criticism at Parliament’s decision not to strip Belinda Balluku of her mandate. She described the majority’s position as shameful and said there was no reason for the lawmaker to hide behind her mandate.

“You may also be innocent, but in this way the impression is created that you are admitting you are corrupt. The matter must be addressed openly,” Açka said.

She also commented on the protests against the government, saying she had expected them to produce a clear political direction after two or three months of consolidation. According to her, the protests have political demands, and these cannot remain without a leadership structure.

Açka said that if the opposing forces do not unite, a third political pole should be created, including important figures from the DP. She believes there are exceptional elements within the party that could contribute to overthrowing Edi Rama.

In conclusion, she said SPAK could shake the prime minister, as, in her view, the damage Rama is causing is evident, starting with the Mountains package.
