Navi Pillay awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as Trump administration announces sanctions against the court

Just hours after Navi Pillay, a former judge of the International Criminal Court (ICJ), was announced as the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, President Donald Trump’s administration announced sanctions against the court. The decision is expected to deepen Washington’s diplomatic clashes with its European allies.

The Trump administration’s stance toward the court has long been hostile. Previously, the United States had taken punitive measures against its prosecutors and judges, while the latest decision also extends to companies that may provide services to the ICC itself.

“President Trump will never allow the International Criminal Court to prosecute Americans,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, according to Reuters.

Rubio said the measures aim to sever financial ties with the court. “That is why today the United States is imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court. We will halt transactions with this ruthless court, cutting off its resources and paralyzing its operations,” he said.

South African lawyer Navi Pillay, 85, was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. She previously served as a judge at the International Criminal Court.
