During today’s session, Haxhiu stressed that protests are a right guaranteed by the Constitution and the legislation in force. She warned that any act of violence would harm the cause for which the protesters are expressing their support—that of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and the freedom fighters.
“The right to protest is guaranteed by the Constitution, but also by the legislation in force, and as such, it must be fully respected. From this lectern, from this place, from this institution, as Speaker of the Assembly and acting president, I call on all protesters to preserve the peaceful nature of the protest, because I believe we all agree that violence harms the cause we want to defend—that of the KLA, but also that of our freedom fighters,” Haxhiu declared.
She recalled that the Assembly had approved the draft law in principle and had listed it as the first item on the agenda of the session.
Haxhiu called on the protesters to remain calm and continue the gathering peacefully.
The Assembly Speaker also urged the parliamentary groups to convey the same message, stressing that “neither the KLA nor our freedom fighters are defended through violence.”
