According to footage of the incident, the SUV was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control. The vehicle veered toward the side of the road and crashed into the parked car, inside which Ryo Uchimiya was located.
The force of the impact pushed the 51-year-old’s car into another vehicle. After colliding with it, that vehicle then crashed into a third car.
Ryo Uchimiya was found dead in the back seat of his car. He had reportedly gone to the area early to work at a catering event and was resting in the vehicle until work began.
The victim had experience as a chef and had worked for several years at the renowned Nobu Malibu restaurant. Colleagues said he had also been working the night before the accident.
The SUV was being driven by a 16-year-old who was traveling eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway. Preliminary information suggests that he may have exceeded the speed limit, as the vehicle is believed to have been traveling at around 50 miles per hour, or approximately 80 kilometers per hour.
Authorities are investigating to determine exactly how the accident occurred. One possibility being examined is that the SUV crossed the road’s solid white edge line before striking the victim’s parked car.
