Spanish authorities remove more than 3,000 migrants from Ceuta’s coastline after their arrival from Morocco

A Spanish police operation has made it possible to evacuate a migrant camp on Ceuta’s coastline, where tens of thousands of people had crossed from Morocco around two months earlier, the Spanish government announced.

At the end of July, more than 72,000 migrants crossed the border from Morocco into Ceuta. Most of them have since returned, but at least 10,000 people continue to remain in this Spanish autonomous region in North Africa. Their presence has strained the region’s capacity and increased tensions.

According to a Spanish Interior Ministry spokesperson who spoke to Reuters on Monday, police removed the migrants from Trampolin Beach. Around 3,000 people had lived there for two months, in tents and makeshift shelters.

The migrants have been transferred to a temporary center, where they will undergo legal procedures or may be returned to Morocco.
