Weekend Brings High Fire Risk in 8 Counties as IGJEO Warns of Temperatures up to 39 Degrees

Rising temperatures, which are expected to reach up to 39 degrees Celsius, will increase the risk of wildfires in eight counties across the country over the weekend. In its Risk Bulletin, the Institute of Geosciences says the highest risk level is forecast mainly in the Western Lowlands, specifically in the counties of Lezhë, Durrës, Tirana, Elbasan, Fier, Berat, Gjirokastër and Vlorë. The risk is assessed as lower in Shkodër, Kukës, Dibër and Korçë, although it could reach a high level in certain areas of these counties.

Mallakastër: The most concerning situation is currently in Fier County, where a fire has remained active for several days in several villages in Mallakastër. The flames have spread across approximately 180 hectares in Riban, Ngraçan and Panahor, with the most critical situation reported in Panahor. A helicopter is being used to fight the fire from the air, while 40 Armed Forces personnel, four fire engines and 55 firefighters have been deployed on the ground. According to the authorities, homes are not at risk from the flames.

Dajt: The operation to extinguish the fire in the Priskë and Çakallesh forest area is continuing. The Civil Protection Agency says that populated areas are not under threat.

Librazhd: In Elbasan County, active fires have continued for several days in the village of Shqiponjë, on Dardhë Mountain and in Mjekës. Local authorities report that the fire in Shqiponjë has been brought under control, while the fire on Dardhë Mountain has been contained. No risk to the community has been reported in these areas either.

Berat: In the village of Kostren 2, part of the Municipality of Berat, the fire has reignited, and firefighters are continuing their efforts to extinguish it.

A total of 54 fire engines and 502 operational personnel are involved in firefighting operations across Albania. They are also being supported by 110 Armed Forces personnel, three helicopters and the Air Force’s “Air Tractor” aircraft.
