Portugal has been gripped by a wave of shock after the tragic news of the death of an 18-month-old baby, who remained forgotten for eight hours inside a school bus in Almada, Setúbal region.

The child, named Sofia, had boarded the school transport vehicle around 08:00 on Thursday to head to the daycare. For reasons that remain under investigation, she did not get off at her destination and remained locked in the vehicle parked right next to the daycare center.
Throughout the day, no one noticed her absence. The dramatic situation came to light only in the afternoon, around 16:00, when her mother arrived to pick up her daughter and the institution’s staff realized that the little one had not set foot in the daycare premises at all that day.
Immediately, the staff rushed to the bus, where they found the child showing no signs of life. Police forces, volunteer firefighter teams, emergency medical services, and the Mobile Psychological Intervention Unit of the National Institute of Medical Emergencies quickly arrived at the scene.
Despite the relentless efforts of the rescue teams to revive her, doctors confirmed the baby’s death at the scene.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese Judicial Police have taken over the investigation to clarify all the circumstances of this tragedy. Forensic specialists and investigators have already begun gathering evidence and questioning those responsible, with the aim of determining and bringing to justice anyone responsible for the loss of the innocent life of the 18-month-old.
