The report says Russia has suffered approximately 1.4 million soldiers killed, wounded or missing. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s losses are estimated at between 525,000 and 625,000, including 125,000-150,000 killed.
The authors of the study underline that Moscow is losing military personnel at a faster rate than it can replace them. According to them, the heaviest blow is being felt especially in poorer areas and among ethnic minorities.
According to experts, in recent months the situation regarding losses has worsened significantly for Russia. This is mainly linked to Ukraine’s effective use of drones, which have limited the movements of Russian forces along the front line.
The study also lists other reasons that have contributed to Russia’s high losses, including its attrition strategy, poor military tactics, corruption and low troop morale.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine makes official figures on war losses public, but CSIS estimates are consistent with analyses by Western countries.
