South Korea’s National Intelligence Service has also concluded that the regime is treating Kim Joo-ae as her father’s potential successor.

Since 2022, Kim Joo-ae has been seen increasingly often alongside Kim Jong-un at major political and military ceremonies. North Korean state media have begun attributing to her titles traditionally reserved for top leaders and their successors.

Previously, South Korean intelligence had suggested that Kim Jong-un could be the parent of three children, but their birth order remained unclear. Now, Seoul reports that there is evidence indicating that Kim Joo-ae has a younger brother or sister. At the same time, investigations continue to verify the existence of an older brother. According to South Korean authorities, even if an older brother exists, he is not seen as a contender to take the reins of power.

Kim Jong-un came to lead North Korea in 2011, following the death of his father, Kim Jong-il. He thus continued the dynastic line of the Kim family, which began with his grandfather, Kim Il-sung.

Succession in North Korea remains one of the regime’s greatest mysteries, while Kim Joo-ae’s public appearances fuel speculation that she is being prepared for a leadership role in the country’s future.
