A horrific domestic crime has shocked the public in the United States. Authorities report that a 47-year-old man killed his wife and their six children, then set the house on fire and finally took his own life.

The victims have been identified as Christopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda “Maddie” Karolkiewicz, 39, and the couple’s six children, who ranged in age from 5 to 15. Their bodies were discovered at the family’s residence in Grand Haven Township, near Lake Michigan.
According to preliminary investigation data, Christopher Karolkiewicz first shot dead his wife and children. Then, it is suspected that he set several fires in different rooms of the house before shooting himself to end his life.
Police were alerted after calls from neighbors who saw white smoke coming from the building. It took emergency crews approximately three hours to find the origin of the flames and to penetrate the interior, where they encountered the bodies of the eight family members.
Some of the victims were found in the bedrooms. Forensic examinations confirmed that all had died from gunshot wounds, not from the fire.
Investigators are convinced that the fire was intentionally set in multiple points of the residence after the killings, and they are investigating the exact ignition mechanism. Even the family’s pets did not survive the flames.
The American press reports that Christopher and Amanda met in 2008 at their workplace and tied the knot in August 2009. The couple had four biological children and later adopted two girls.
However, behind the appearance of a happy family, serious marital tensions appear to have been hidden. About eight years before the tragedy, Christopher had started an extramarital affair with a much younger intern at work.
Two years ago, Amanda had shared her pain on Reddit, confessing that her husband had cheated on her again with an intern. In one of her posts, she said that after long suffering, she had realized she needed to rely on herself to move forward.
Authorities are continuing the investigation to fully shed light on the dynamics and causes of this grave family tragedy.
