Amid Pressure for Patriot Missiles, Zelensky Dismisses Ukrainian Ambassador to US

Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna. The Ukrainian president’s decision had been expected following last month’s government reshuffle.

Her departure was formalized by decree at a time when Kyiv is significantly increasing pressure on Washington to secure more Patriot air-defense missiles, which are needed to deter Russian attacks.

Stefanishyna, who previously served as deputy prime minister and justice minister, was appointed ambassador to Washington in July last year.

For Ukraine, the position of ambassador to the US is of crucial importance, as the country relies on American weapons supplies and intelligence sharing in its war against Russia. Zelensky’s relationship with US President Donald Trump has gone through periods of tension and, in some cases, turmoil.

Recently, however, the Republican president has taken a more encouraging stance toward the Ukrainian leader. Ukrainian media report that Stefanishyna is being investigated by Ukraine’s anti-corruption agency over suspicions related to corruption, but she has not been formally charged.

Zelensky, who made changes to the government in July, has not yet announced who will succeed Stefanishyna as ambassador to Washington.
