On Wednesday evening, Gustavo Duque, the mayor of Chacao, a district of Caracas, said that at least four buildings had collapsed after powerful earthquakes struck the capital and other parts of Venezuela.
According to him, six other buildings had also suffered major damage and were being assessed.

From the emergency zone, Duque said that more than 500 people were involved in search-and-rescue operations in Los Palos Grandes, Altamira and Belo Campo, precisely in the places where the worst damage has been reported so far.
The mayor also announced that emergency teams had managed to rescue 18 people.
He said that 18 people had so far been rescued alive, describing this as good news given the scale of the collapse of these buildings.
