At least 475 people have died in the devastating floods that swept through the border area between Nepal and Tibet. Meanwhile, emergency teams are facing the possibility of a new wave of flooding.

Chinese authorities have suspended rescue operations near the Nepal-Tibet border. The decision is linked to fears that a lake recently formed by rising water levels could breach protective barriers and cause another flood.
The number of people missing in the area between Nepal and Tibet is estimated to be in the hundreds. According to local officials, the disaster began after a glacier collapsed, sending a massive amount of water downstream. The floods engulfed homes and roads, while also destroying an important border crossing between the two territories.
Although the search for survivors continues, the warning of a second wave has heightened concern in the affected area. The region, which is an important tourist destination visited by tens of thousands of people every year, remains at the center of rescue operations. The relatives of those missing are still waiting for information about their loved ones.
The Nepalese army has evacuated around 900 people from the flooded areas, including foreign nationals. Search efforts have focused particularly on the districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot.
Of the 900 people rescued, 119 are foreign nationals, 92 of whom are Indian. Indian nationals make up the largest group of foreign tourists affected by the floods. Brigadier General Rajaram Basnet, a spokesman for the Nepalese army, said he “had never seen such a disaster in his life.”
