This position was set out in a document submitted to the United Nations General Assembly, signed by Prime Minister Peter Magyar and published in Hungary’s official gazette.

Through the document, Budapest expresses its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as Kyiv’s right to defend itself. “We condemn Russian military aggression,” the text states, describing Moscow’s actions as a threat to Hungarian and European security and to the international order.

The declaration represents a significant shift in Budapest’s foreign policy, following the approach pursued for years by Viktor Orban regarding the war in Ukraine.

Considered one of Vladimir Putin’s closest allies in Europe, Orban had repeatedly opposed the European Union’s military and financial assistance to Ukraine.

With this change, Hungary’s new government is signaling that it is distancing itself from Budapest’s previous policy toward Moscow and the conflict in Ukraine.
