Flames Engulf Belgium’s Largest Mountain Nature Park, Burning at Least 16,500 Hectares

At least 16,500 hectares have been engulfed by fire in Belgium’s largest mountain nature park, located in the east of the country, according to Belgian authorities.

The fire broke out around midday yesterday in a forested area of the Fan region, near the border with Germany, and continued to spread overnight.

To support the operation, the European Union deployed three helicopters and two firefighting aircraft from the Czech Republic, Sweden and the Netherlands. Firefighters from across the country, soldiers with long-range water vehicles and farmers are also involved in efforts on the ground.

Because of the difficult terrain where the fire is burning, efforts to extinguish it can be carried out mainly from the air. The operation is also being complicated by winds that constantly change direction and spread the flames in all directions.

Local municipal authorities have urged residents to be prepared in case an evacuation becomes necessary.

In the announcement, residents were advised to calmly prepare a small bag containing essential items and, if possible, place it in their vehicle so they can leave quickly if necessary.

To make way for emergency services, the two roads in the area, the N68 and N672, have been closed. Meanwhile, drivers on the A3 and A27 motorways are being alerted to the danger through warning signs.
