He stressed that the democratic balance must be preserved and that the will of the people, as expressed in the June 7 elections, must be taken into account.
According to Kurti, a political agreement has so far been lacking because of the wide gap between the respective election result and concrete ambitions. Nevertheless, he said hope should not be lost and that optimism about reaching an agreement must be maintained.
Kurti recalled that Osmani was elected president after they entered the race with the understanding that the candidate who ranked first would become prime minister, while the second would become president.
Under the current circumstances, he said the head of state should be elected by consensus and should not be a party representative.
He proposed that the parties agree on a consensus candidate distinguished by their values and principles. Kurti said he knew a number of people capable of performing this duty but did not name any specific candidates, to avoid claims that the nominee had been proposed by him.
Finally, Kurti said he was doing everything possible to find a solution to the situation.
