In the first week of July, the head of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Joan Pons Sampietro, announced that the Serbian state had expressed readiness to host the annual session of this organization in 2027, precisely in Belgrade.

This proposal was immediately met with opposition from US Congressman Joe Wilson, following some statements made by Snezhana Paunović, a minister in the executive led by Aleksandar Vučić.
Wilson argued that precisely these stances represent a strong reason to reject Belgrade’s offer. In a harsh reaction, the American lawmaker described the minister’s words as unacceptable and provocative, stressing that they contradict the very purpose of the OSCE.
According to him, the organization was founded to facilitate the achievement of agreements in Europe, not to revive ethnic divisions, therefore the Parliamentary Assembly must categorically reject the Serbian candidacy for the 2027 summit.
On the other hand, experts on political developments in the region see Paunović’s statement as further evidence of the nationalist rhetoric that continues to dominate in Belgrade. They emphasize that the international community’s reactions must be stronger than this.
Public condemnation alone is not enough, analysts underline, but concrete measures of a political and diplomatic nature are necessary, which would accompany these hostile expressions. Also, according to them, international institutions possess sufficient tools, including the sanctioning of officials who spread hate speech and undermine efforts to normalize the situation in the Western Balkans.
Analyst Nexhat Haziri, in a conversation with “Bota sot”, assessed that Ambassador Wilson was right to demand that the Serbian minister’s statement not be dismissed, but followed by sanctions from the democratic world. According to Haziri, the suggestion to move the annual OSCE meeting away from Belgrade constitutes a deserved response to Serbia’s behaviors.
Broadening the picture, he recalled the Banjska events and other previous episodes that testify to official Belgrade’s destructive approach towards Kosovo, a stance that has endangered not only bilateral relations but also regional stability. However, Haziri expressed strong doubts that there would be real consequences, predicting that the international community, especially the European Union, would again settle for protest notes and general statements.
In concluding his remarks, he pointed out that weak diplomacy and unhealthy relations with friendly countries contribute to Serbia avoiding the cost of these actions so far.
Along the same lines, another political analyst, Leon Duhanaj, considered Paunović’s statement as yet another testament to official Belgrade’s policy towards Albanians, an additional layer in what he described as the long wall of shame built over centuries. For Duhanaj, these words show that Serbia remains tied to the logic of the past and to nationalist language, which produces conflicts instead of reconciliation.
He stressed that voices representing a rational and European spirit are rare on the Serbian political scene, and such statements directly undermine aspirations for stability. For this reason, Duhanaj insisted that verbal condemnations are not enough; concrete punitive measures are needed against politicians who use such dangerous rhetoric.
He added that the international community must seriously examine Serbia’s participation in bodies where respect for human rights and democratic values prevails. In his closing words, Duhanaj warned that if these policies continue unpunished, then the diplomatic and political instruments at disposal must be activated to make the cost of such language tangible for official Belgrade.
