Police Scotland Investigation: Officer Suspected of Rapes and Sexual Assaults Over 14 Years

A wide-ranging investigation into corruption and abuse within Police Scotland has uncovered allegations that an officer led a double life for more than 14 years, acting as a serial rapist and sexual offender.

At the centre of the case is Police Constable Alan Greer, who died by suicide in May at the age of 47. He is suspected of assaulting at least nine women, while investigators warn that the number of victims could rise as they continue to examine material seized from his electronic devices.

The case began with a complaint from a woman in her 40s. In late 2025, she went to a police station in Glasgow and reported that she had been raped by a police officer in 2012.

The woman said she had called the police at the time over an incident at her home. Two officers went to the address, took her statement and then left. Several hours later, she said, one of the officers returned alone, forced her to have sex and then raped her.

The report prompted Police Scotland’s Professional Standards Department to launch an investigation, which identified the suspect. Checks found that, following the 2012 incident, Greer had repeatedly accessed the victim’s file on the police information system without any official reason. He had even carried out searches while on leave.

The digital trail left in the system was used by investigators to build the case against the officer and uncover allegations involving a series of other assaults.

During the investigation, eight other women believed to have been assaulted by Greer were identified. Five of them worked as sex workers.

According to police, Greer had regularly used the services of numerous women throughout his career. Some of the alleged assaults are described as extremely violent. Authorities said that, had he been alive, he could also have been investigated for attempted murder in several cases.

The investigation also found that Greer had secretly photographed two female police officers during training without their knowledge or consent.

On April 24, police searched his home and seized seven mobile phones and a laptop. Greer was arrested on suspicion of the rape reported in 2012, suspended from duty and then temporarily released while the investigation continued.

The examination of the electronic devices led to the discovery of thousands of videos and photographs which, according to investigators, show the extent of his suspected criminal activity. Only some of the material has been analysed so far, and police have not ruled out identifying further victims.

Greer’s Death During the Investigation

Authorities informed Greer’s family about developments in the case on May 5 and put protective measures in place. The following day, he was found dead after taking his own life.

Police Scotland leaders said neither his family nor his colleagues had been aware of the double life he was suspected of leading.

Police Scotland Deputy Chief Constable Lynn Ratcliffe described the findings as “truly shocking.” She said Greer had abused the power and trust that came with his position, exploiting women he encountered through his work.

Police have urged any women who believe they may have been victims of Alan Greer to come forward. They have assured them that every account will be taken seriously and that those affected will receive the support they need.
